Tennessee Refocuses on Kentucky After Road Loss to Alabama

After a 37–20 loss to Alabama, Tennessee has turned its attention to Kentucky.

After dropping six spots to No. 17 in this week’s Top 25 AP Poll, the Volunteers begin its climb to try and secure a College Football Playoff spot and regain momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.

Tennessee’s defense struggled to get stops in Tuscaloosa, and head coach Josh Heupel said the issues stemmed largely from poor positioning and technique.

“Some of them, we’re in a bad body position,” Heupel said. “Some of them, we just don’t wrap up and ultimately make the play. We have to find a way to get them down and make that play.”

Despite the defensive breakdowns, the Tennessee offense showed flashes of explosiveness which was a reflection of their attention to detail in preparation.

Running back DeSean Bishop delivered the Vols’ longest rushing score of the season with a 44-yard touchdown, a play Heupel said was no surprise based on the sophomore’s consistency.

“You know exactly what you’re getting from him. Guys that do that continue to get better. That’s been DeSean’s journey in college football and this season, too,” Heupel said.

Running back Star Thomas said Bishop’s performance was a result of habits he sees every day.

“He’s like a sponge,” Thomas said. “He’s going to ask questions, write them down, take all the notes. He’s going to let his preparation from the week go into the game.”

Bishop said the bond in the running back room has fueled his growth and confidence going forward.

“To have someone that supportive of me, knowing that he could be out there making the same plays too, I am very grateful for Star,” Bishop said.

With the playoffs on the line, Tennessee now shifts fully to Saturday’s matchup in Lexington.

Heupel is undefeated against the Wildcats during his tenure at UT. The Vols look to bounce back by correcting defensive mistakes and building on their offensive momentum.

Kickoff in Lexington is set for Saturday.
