Turnovers, Third-Quarter Run Push UConn Past Tennessee 96–66

UConn used a decisive third-quarter surge to pull away from Tennessee, handing the Lady Vols a 96–66 loss after the game was tied at halftime.

Hartford, Ct. – Tennessee traveled to Hartford on Sunday to face a red-hot UConn team riding one of the most dominant stretches of its season. The Lady Vols could not keep pace after halftime in a 96–66 loss at PeoplesBank Arena.

After entering intermission even at 42, the Huskies seized control with pressure defense and efficient shot-making, outscoring Tennessee 54–24 in the second half. A 33–7 run spanning less than 10 minutes pushed the margin to 30 and put the game out of reach.

Turnovers Fueled the Separation

Turnovers proved to be the difference, particularly during UConn’s game-breaking stretch. Tennessee finished with 20 turnovers, several of them coming during extended sequences when the Huskies turned defensive pressure into immediate offense.

UConn forced 10 first-half turnovers and converted them into 17 points, doing most of its damage early with seven steals in the opening quarter. Tennessee cleaned things up in the second quarter and briefly swung momentum, tying the game at 36 following a Zee Spearman steal and Talaysia Cooper layup.

However, the issues resurfaced after halftime. UConn capitalized consistently, using turnovers and rushed possessions to fuel transition scoring. Tennessee forced 10 turnovers of its own but managed just six points off those opportunities.

Tennessee Got in Its Own Way Offensively

Even during competitive stretches, Tennessee struggled with offensive discipline. The Lady Vols often scored early in the shot clock without forcing defensive rotation, missed chances in transition, and leaned heavily on the three-point shot during key stretches.

A Janiah Barker three cut the deficit to four in the second quarter, but three straight misses from distance followed and led to a scoring drought that stalled momentum. Tennessee shot efficiently around the rim, finished 11-of-21 on layups, but too many possessions ended with perimeter attempts.

During UConn’s decisive second-half run, Tennessee went scoreless from the field for nearly five minutes, and missed 11 straight shots as the gap widened.

Connectivity Was There Early

Tennessee showed its ability to compete when the offense and defense were connected. After falling behind 21–5 in the first quarter, the Lady Vols responded with a 25–15 run that carried into the second. Spearman worked through contact for finishes inside, and ball movement helped Tennessee erase the deficit and enter halftime tied.

That connectivity faded after the break. UConn opened the third quarter with increased ball pressure and efficient shooting, building its largest lead during the 33–7 run that decided the game.

UConn shot 58 percent from the field and 50 percent from three, led by Azzi Fudd’s 27 points. Barker paced Tennessee with 16 points, while Spearman added 14.

The 30-point margin ranked as one of UConn’s most decisive wins this season against Power-4 or ranked competition.

Tennessee now suffers back-to-back losses for the first time this season.
