He’s the Perfect Villain: Jaylen Carey Returns to Vanderbilt

When Tennessee travels to Vanderbilt this weekend, much of the attention will center on Jaylen Carey.

Carey spent last season at Vanderbilt before transferring to in-state rival Tennessee in the spring. That move now places him at the center of Saturday’s rivalry meeting. From the moment he arrived on Rocky Top, he made it clear he wanted distance from the black and gold.

Distancing From His Past

Carey showed that separation during his introductory press conference. A reporter asked him about last season’s meetings between Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

One of his strongest performances came Feb. 15 in Knoxville. He tied a career high with 18 points while shooting 5-of-6 from the floor and 7-of-9 at the line at Food City Center.

“You think you got Tennessee’s attention that game?” Carey was asked.

“Yeah, most definitely,” Carey said. “Both (meetings) really. Even the one at Vanderbilt or that, excuse me, that place.”

The remark quickly circulated among both fan bases.

“He’s the perfect villain,” Joey Dwyer of Vandy on SI said during an appearance on Live Ball. “There’s a lot of hatred towards Jaylen Carey. He’s leaned into this.”

Transfer Adds Fuel

Carey entered the NCAA transfer portal in late March and committed to Tennessee soon after. Tennessee announced his addition April 8, 2025, highlighting his SEC experience and frontcourt versatility.

Nashville has not forgotten his comments after his departure.

“Jaylen Carey’s quickly gone from a guy who endeared himself to Vanderbilt fans to maybe the biggest villain that I’ve seen in this program,” Dwyer said.

Inside the Vanderbilt locker room, the reaction has mirrored the stands. Guard Tyler Nickel called Carey a “traitor” during a Twitch stream over the summer. Dwyer said the move still carries weight within the program.

“I don’t know that I’ve heard a good word from somebody in the program about Jaylen Carey since he left,” Dwyer said.

After transferring, Carey doubled down in an interview with Rocky Top Insider.

“I’m a Vol now man. I don’t care about no black-and-gold. I bleed orange now man. I don’t care about what they’ve got to say.”

Hostile Return Ahead

Memorial Gym is expected to provide one of the most intense environments of the season.

“All I’ve thought the last few days is, is Jaylen Carey even going to make it off the bus and into the gym before he gets booed?” Dwyer said. “This is going to be as hostile as I’ve ever seen Memorial Gym.”

For Tennessee, the question is not just production. It is composure.

“He’s a gladiator. He’s a guy that plays a lot of emotion,” Dwyer said. “Can he channel that to be something good for Tennessee, I think is almost one of the bigger keys of the game for them.”

Carey’s return guarantees this installment of the rivalry will carry the tension every rivalry needs.

The two programs clash Saturday at 2:00 p.m. eastern.
