Lady Vols extend NCAA Tournament streak, get chance to avenge regular-season loss

The historic streak continues for the Lady Vols.

Tennessee will appear in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament for the 44th straight time after the bracket was revealed Sunday night. The berth extends its record streak of appearing in every tournament since the event began in 1982.

The Lady Vols earned a No. 10 seed and will begin their tournament run in Regional 3 in Fort Worth. Tennessee faces No. 7 seed NC State in the first round Friday in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The matchup is a rematch from November, when NC State defeated Tennessee 80-77.

The winner will advance to face the winner of the matchup between the region’s No. 2 and No. 15 seeds.

The No. 10 seed is among the lowest in program history, but it is not the lowest. Tennessee received a No. 11 seed in the 2019 tournament.

Still, the bid keeps the Lady Vols’ historic consistency intact. Tennessee has won eight national championships and remains one of the most decorated programs in women’s college basketball.

The winner will advance to face the winner of No. 2 Michigan and No. 15 Holy Cross in the second round at the Ann Arbor site.
