Tennessee transfer point guard Terrence Hill Jr. has been in Knoxville for only a few weeks, but he already sees one of the traits that has defined Rick Barnes’ most successful teams.
Despite welcoming an almost entirely new roster, Hill said the Vols have quickly developed chemistry through a willingness to embrace Barnes’ demanding approach.
“I would just say the versatility of our team,” Hill said. “We have a lot of different guys that can do a lot of different things, especially on the offensive side. But then just our chemistry over a short period of time has really surprised me. Just everybody willing to buy into what coach is saying, all the coaches saying, just very impactful to me.”
Hill transferred to Tennessee after a breakout sophomore season at VCU where he averaged 15 points on 46% scoring from the field. He said adjusting to Barnes’ coaching style came naturally because he understood what to expect.
“I knew he was a high intense coach,” Hill said. “You kind of just get used to it over time, especially if you want to get better. Everything he’s saying is out of love for you to get better.”
Hill added that Barnes’ attention to detail stands out immediately.
“He’s more intense from the jump,” Hill said. “He’s more locked in on the small details than anything else. He just wants us to be as best as we can every rep.”
Shortly after arriving on campus, Hill also leaned on former Tennessee point guards for advice. Conversations with Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Zakai Zeigler helped prepare him for the expectations that come with leading Barnes’ offense.
“They were just telling me, ‘Trust the process,'” Hill said. “He’s going to be on you the most because you’re the point guard. You’ve got to be reflective of him.”
Now settling into his leadership role, Hill said Barnes has challenged him to play faster and become more vocal while helping guide a roster filled with transfers and newcomers.

“My speed,” Hill said when asked what Barnes has emphasized. “He wants me to pick up my pace more, get the team going, me using my voice more, just taking on that leader role.”
Hill believes those early investments are already paying off, pointing to a team that has embraced competition while building chemistry well before the season begins.
“I feel like the chemistry is going to come over time,” Hill said. “But just building that bond early is very special.”
