Tennessee safety Edrees Farooq will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn patellar tendon during Friday’s practice.
Farooq, a junior, was transported by ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center following the injury.
“We stand with Edrees and support him as he begins the recovery process,” the program said in an official statement. “We know he will continue to make a strong leadership impact on our team this fall.”
Farooq was projected to play a vital role in defensive coordinator Jim Knowles’ gameplan. Last season, the defensive back recorded 76 tackles, two interceptions, five passes defended, and four forced fumbles. He also returned an interception for a touchdown in the 2026 spring game.
Farooq becomes the third Tennessee defensive player lost for the 2026 campaign, joining linebacker Jaedon Harmon and cornerback Jadais Richard.
Tennessee’s depth in the secondary will be tested in Farooq’s absence. Penn State transfer Dejuan Lane and Michigan import T.J. Metcalf are expected to shoulder the majority of snaps as the top two safeties. The Volunteers will also look for contributions from reserves Dylan Lewis, Joel Wyatt, Appalachian State transfer D.J. Burks, and Sidney Walton.
