Earl Grant wasn’t searching for just any job.
When Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes called, the longtime head coach said the opportunity felt different.
“I really wasn’t looking for a job… I was looking for an assignment,” Grant said. “When Coach Barnes called me and shared his vision… it just felt like a perfect assignment for me.”
That sense of purpose and familiarity helped bring Grant to Knoxville, where he joins Barnes’ staff following five seasons as the head coach at Boston College.

Grant’s hiring comes after Tennessee’s third consecutive Elite Eight appearance, as Barnes continues to reshape his staff and roster.
But the foundation of the move goes back years.
Grant and Barnes first built their relationship while coaching in South Carolina, Barnes at Clemson and Grant at the College of Charleston. Over time, that connection grew through recruiting trails and offseason conversations.
“He and his wife would travel to South Carolina on vacation, and I kind of had a little GPS on him,” Grant said. “So I would ask him, ‘Hey, can you come over? I want to talk basketball.’”
Those conversations left a lasting impression on Grant, including a lesson that still shapes his approach to coaching.
“You can’t be good at everything… you’ve got to be great at three things,” Grant said.
For Barnes, the connection wasn’t just about shared basketball philosophy, it was about trust.
After parting ways with Boston College at the end of the season, Grant faced a transition Barnes knows well from his own career.
“The way he handled losing his job… I’ve been through that myself,” Barnes said.
That perspective played a role in Barnes’ decision to bring Grant to Tennessee.
“God put it on my heart… this is the right guy,” Barnes said. “I didn’t talk to anybody else.”
Barnes added that Grant’s impact will extend well beyond the court.
“He’s got an assignment here that’s bigger than basketball,” Barnes said. “He’s going to impact this program in more ways than what he does on the court.”

For Grant, the opportunity is rooted in something bigger than his own career trajectory.
“I want to see Coach Barnes be successful at the highest level,” he said. “He deserves it.”
As Tennessee builds its next roster and coaching structure, Grant’s arrival represents more than a staff addition. It a chance to continue serving. A continuation of a relationship built over time, now aligned in a shared purpose.
