ESPN Footage Adds Twist to Weekly-Pannell Dispute

Former Tennessee star Taylor Pannell has sparked a viral debate during the Women’s College World Series. She accused Lady Vols coach Karen Weekly of telling her she “made a mistake” during the postgame handshake line following Tennessee’s 2-1 walk-off victory over Texas Tech.

When asked about the exchange during postgame media availability, Weekly said she simply told Pannell “good game.”

“Good game, like I say to every player. Good game,” Weekly said.

Pannell offered a sharply different account.

“We were walking through the line just saying ‘good game’, and she said that I made a mistake instead of saying ‘good game’, which is kind of crazy,” Pannell said. “Like celebrate with your team. I just think it’s funny she’s still thinking about it. It’s old news. Whatever.”

The comments quickly spread across social media, reigniting discussion surrounding Pannell’s departure from Tennessee following the 2025 season and her subsequent transfer to Texas Tech.

A day later, ESPN broadcasted video of the exchange during Nebraska Texas’ elimination game.

While viewing the replay, ESPN commentators noted that the footage appeared to show Weekly telling Pannell “good game,” aligning with the Tennessee coach’s account of the interaction. While several moments after the handshake Pannell is seen reacting to something. What that might be is unknown at this time.

The moment immediately drew additional attention online, with many fans pointing to the replay as evidence that Weekly’s version of events was accurate.

This comes almost a year after Pannell entered the transfer portal after the 2025 season and quickly committed to Texas Tech. The quick move fueled speculation among some fans about possible tampering. However, no evidence has emerged to support those claims and all parties involved have denied any wrongdoing.

Shortly after Pannell announced her commitment to Texas Tech, Weekly posted a message on social media criticizing tampering in college athletics.

“I think we can all agree on 2 things: 1) women making money in sports is awesome and long overdue; 2) contacting players (directly or indirectly) before their season ends and signing them to NIL deals before they enter the portal is wrong. Money isn’t the issue – tampering is!” Weekly wrote on X.

Although Weekly did not mention Pannell or Texas Tech by name. Still, the timing of the post led many fans to connect the comments to the transfer.

Pannell played a significant role in Texas Tech’s match against Tennessee. One that included a slide at home plate to give the Red Raiders their lone run on Saturday.

Tennessee ultimately won 2-1 on a walk-off home run, sending Texas Tech to the loser’s bracket.
