Tennessee’s quarterback competition appears to have its winner.
True freshman Faizon Brandon has won Tennessee’s starting quarterback job, edging out redshirt freshman George MacIntyre, according to a report Monday from On3.
The decision completes a rapid rise for Brandon. The 5-star arrived on campus this offseason as one of the nation’s highest-rated quarterback prospects but entered a competition MacIntyre appeared positioned to control coming out of spring practice.
Instead, Brandon continued closing the gap.
According to On3, Brandon had the stronger performance during Tennessee’s final fall camp scrimmage Saturday.
The consistent performances appears to have helped settle a quarterback competition that remained open deep into August.
Brandon’s mobility has continually separated him throughout the preseason. While his physical development has allowed the freshman to push for the job earlier than Tennessee may have initially anticipated.
The 6-foot-4 quarterback also arrived with an impressive high school résumé.
Brandon went 35-1 as a starter at Grimsley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina. He lead the program to consecutive state championships. He completed more than 72% of his career passes for 6,374 yards and 79 touchdowns while adding 1,261 rushing yards and 21 scores.
He was ranked the No. 10 overall prospect and No. 3 quarterback in the 2026 recruiting class, according to the Rivals.
Brandon is expected to make his first career start when Tennessee opens the season against Furman on Sept. 5 at Neyland Stadium. His first major test will arrive one week later when the Vols travel to face Georgia Tech in a primetime matchup.
For Josh Heupel, the decision also represents a significant bet on upside. Brandon entered fall camp trying to prove he could legitimately challenge for the job.
Less than two weeks before the season opener, he appears to have done considerably more than that.
