Tennessee names the next head baseball coach

Nearly 72 hours after Tony Vitello accepted the San Francisco Giants’ offer to become their next manager, Tennessee found his replacement.

Josh Elander has been promoted to head coach of Tennessee baseball.

Elander enters his ninth season on staff with the Volunteers. His career in the Orange and White began in August 2017, when he joined Tony Vitello’s initial staff as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He was promoted to associate head coach following Tennessee’s record-setting 2022 season.

In a statement to Tennessee, Elander said, “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity here on Rocky Top.”

Elander added, “I’m really happy for our players to continue building on what we’ve already built here. The hunt continues, and we’re still excited. Love this place and these people. So thankful for the best that’s yet to come.”

In a statement to the University, Athletic Director Danny White said, “From the outset of this national search, Josh emerged as the undeniable top choice.”

Elander has been instrumental in elevating Tennessee baseball both on the recruiting trail and on the field. According to Perfect Game, he has assembled eight top-15 recruiting classes during his tenure.

On the field, Tennessee has developed into one of the nation’s most prolific offensive teams under Elander’s guidance.

The Volunteers have ranked inside the top 25 nationally in runs scored and home runs during each of the last six seasons, including No. 1 in the nation in runs and homers in 2022 and 2024.

Former players like Drew Gilbert have taken to social media to advocate for Elander and continued success at Tennessee.

Elander was a key member of the coaching staff that led Tennessee to the 2024 College World Series Championship, defeating Texas A&M in Game Three at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, NE.

Elander’s promotion ensures continuity within a program that has emerged as one of the nation’s elite.

His track record suggests Tennessee baseball will remain in strong hands as it seeks further success on and off the field.
