Karlyn Pickens earns first professional win in debut start

DURHAM, N.C. — Less than two weeks after her Tennessee career ended at the Women’s College World Series, Karlyn Pickens earned her first professional victory Thursday night.

Making her first career pro start in Game 2 of the 2026 season for the Carolina Blaze. Pickens helped lead the Blaze to a 11-2 win at Smith Family Stadium.

The rookie wasted little time making an impression. Pickens struck out the first batter she faced and finished the opening inning with two strikeouts while allowing just one hit.

Pickens cruised through the early innings before running into trouble in the third.

Former UCLA slugger Megan Grant connected on the first pitch she saw, launching a two-run home run over the right-field wall 313 feet to give her team a 2-1 lead.

Pickens tipped her cap to the veteran hitter afterward.

“Credit to Megan. She’s a great hitter,” Pickens said in the postgame press conference. “That ball went really, really far. I’ve got to give it to her. It’s just competing, going up there knowing her strengths, knowing mine and trusting it.”

The Blaze quickly answered.

After falling behind, the offense erupted for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning, turning a one-run deficit into a comfortable lead. The rally included contributions throughout the lineup as the Blaze sent multiple runners across the plate and seized control of the game.

Head coach Kara Dill said the response from the lineup helped fuel the team’s momentum.

“What I loved about that also was right after it, we got a one-two-three inning,” Dill said. “We had the offensive momentum and we shut it down immediately and got right back on offense.”

While the offensive outburst grabbed headlines, Dill was equally impressed with what she saw from her rookie pitcher.

Though she had only been around Pickens for a few days before the season began, Dill said the former Tennessee star has quickly lived up to her reputation.

“She truly is everything that people have said about her,” Dill said. “Just a great human being and a phenomenal softball player too. Full package.”

For Pickens, the transition from college softball to the professional ranks has happened quickly. Her final appearance for Tennessee came in the WCWS semifinals just days before beginning her professional career.

The adjustment, however, has felt familiar.

“I think it was just amazing to see all the familiar faces that you’re playing against and with,” Pickens said. “Players that I grew up watching and also got the privilege to play against in college. Just so many amazing players, a lot of talent.”

Pickens ended her night tossing five innings and five strikeouts, with the last punchout coming against Grant.

“It felt really cool,” Pickens said. “Loved to end on a strikeout. Just how you write it up. Super fun, exciting, just competing out there.”

One game into her professional career, Pickens already has her first start and first win. Thursday night offered an early glimpse of why the Blaze were eager to hand the ball to the former Lady Vol.
