With just two weeks until the season opener, coach Josh Heupel continues to emphasize consistency across all three phases, from pre-snap operations to finishing drives.
Evaluating the second fall scrimmage on Saturday, Heupel pointed to a strong defensive showing that created turnovers and played assignment-sound football. However, the offense left room for improvement.
“Offensively, you know, it didn’t play as clean as we need to,” Heupel said. “Some of that was communication, but some really positive things there, too.”
Naturally, the quarterback room remains the ultimate focal point as the staff evaluates decision-making, ball security and who will ultimately seize the starting job.
While Faizon Brandon and George MacIntyre aren’t live during these situations, the coaching staff is still able to heavily evaluate specific traits from the pocket.

“You can see their ability to manipulate and work in the pocket,” Heupel said. “You can see their ball security in the pocket, out of the pocket, extended plays. You get a chance to see their decision-making down the field. If it’s not open, their ability to tuck it and gain positive yards and put you in the right situation.”
The deep ball has long been a staple in Heupel’s offense, and the program believes the pieces are aligned to connect on those vertical shots this season. The quarterbacks hit a couple of deep throws during Saturday’s session and haven’t had major issues throughout camp.
“All parts of it have got to be tied together, too. The route, the coverage and then the protection piece of it, too,” Heupel said.

Ultimately, Heupel didn’t tip his hand regarding the starter. Whether a decision comes a week out or during game week, he stressed that the coaching staff will simply look at what is best for the football team.
With the clock ticking down, the choice will be made soon. Fortunately for Tennessee, both quarterbacks will likely see game action when the Volunteers officially kick off the season against Furman on Sept. 5.
