3 Takeaways: Tennessee’s Season Ends to Texas in WCWS Semifinals

OKLAHOMA CITY — Tennessee’s season came to an end Monday evening as Texas completed a two-game sweep in the Women’s College World Series semifinals with a 4-0 victory.

The Lady Vols managed just two hits through six innings. Meanwhile the Longhorns used a decisive third inning and another dominant outing from Teagan Kavan to advance to the national championship series.

Here are three takeaways from Tennessee’s season-ending loss.

Texas seized control with a three-run third inning

For two innings, Karlyn Pickens looked dominant, striking out the first three batters she faced and keeping Texas off the scoreboard.

The Longhorns broke through in the third with five hits and aggressive baserunning. Texas opened the inning with consecutive singles before Katie Martinez drove in the game’s first run with an RBI single down the third-base line.

Moments later, Martinez stole second while Ashton Henry alertly broke for home and scored on a steal of home. The Longhorn was able to take advantage of Tennessee’s shifted attention at second base. Reese Atwood followed with an RBI double to left-center field, giving Texas a 3-0 lead.

The three-run frame was all the offense Texas ultimately needed.

Tennessee’s offense never found an answer

The Lady Vols entered the elimination game needing production against one of the nation’s top pitchers but struggled to create traffic on the bases all day.

Tennessee was retired in order during each of the first three innings and recorded just two hits through six frames. The Lady Vols stranded runners in both the fourth and fifth innings but never mounted a sustained threat.

The offensive struggles mirrored a recent trend against elite SEC competition. Tennessee averaged 3.67 runs per game during SEC play and 3.0runs per game across four postseason meetings against conference opponents.

The Lady Vols plated just two runs in the first semifinal game. Texas then shut out the Lady Vols in the if necessary game to advance to the finals.

Teagan Kavan delivered another postseason gem

Texas ace Teagan Kavan controlled the game from the first pitch.

The junior retired the Lady Vols in order in each of the first three innings. She allowed just two hits while striking out 10 without issuing a walk. She threw 112 pitches, 77 for strikes, and faced only 23 batters through six innings.

Kavan’s dominance prevented Tennessee from establishing any offensive rhythm. Nine of the first 18 outs recorded by Texas came via strikeout, and the Lady Vols never advanced a runner past second base against her.

Tennessee suffered its third shutout loss of the season.

Combined with Katie Stewart’s 30th home run of the season in the fifth inning, Texas had more than enough offense to back another stellar outing from its ace and punch its ticket to the championship series.

The loss ends Tennessee’s season one step short of the Women’s College World Series finals.

The Lady Vols finish the 2026 season 49-11.
