Tennessee opens NCAA Tournament play Friday against Northern Kentucky. NKU arrives in Knoxville with momentum after winning the Horizon League Tournament title.
The Lady Vols enter the regional as the No. 7 national seed, while NKU secured its NCAA Tournament bid by defeating Robert Morris 4-3 in the Horizon League championship game last weekend.
On paper, Tennessee holds the advantage nearly everywhere.
The Lady Vols enter regional play batting .307 as a team with 57 home runs and a .543 slugging percentage. NKU, meanwhile, is batting .295 as a team but owns a 5.41 ERA in the circle.
Still, former Tennessee outfielder Rylie West said postseason softball rarely follows the script.
“Everyone in the tournament is good,” West said on Live Ball on Friday. “The margin of error, it is very, very slim.”
West pointed to Tennessee’s execution from the opening pitch as one of the biggest keys to avoiding an upset.
“Tennessee cannot look past them to look for a future game,” West said. “They have to go right at them and also not give them hope.”
Three keys to victory for Tennessee;
Shut Down Momentum Early
NKU enters the regional riding confidence after winning the Horizon League championship. The Norse have won 10 straight games entering Friday’s matchup.
West said Tennessee’s biggest objective should be preventing the underdog from gaining belief early.
“When you give teams that come into your home a little bit of hope, they can ride with that throughout the whole weekend,” West said.

Let the Pitching Staff Control the Game
The biggest statistical edge for Tennessee may come inside the circle.
The Lady Vols have struck out 337 batters this season while allowing only 57 total runs in 43 games. Opponents are slugging just .209 against Tennessee pitching.
West said Tennessee’s velocity could immediately disrupt an NKU lineup that has not consistently faced SEC-caliber arms.
“They don’t see a Karlyn Pickens,” West said of NKU. “They don’t see 70-plus consistently.”
Tennessee entered the NCAA Tournament with one of the nation’s top ERAs, while NKU’s offense has not faced SEC-level velocity consistently this season.
Get the Offense Rolling Again
West also sees Friday as an opportunity for Tennessee’s offense to regain momentum after facing elite SEC pitching throughout conference play.
“When you’re facing a team that pitchers give up a little bit more hits than you’ve seen in SEC play, you have to go out and dominate,” West said.
NKU’s pitching staff has allowed 45 home runs this season and nearly 300 total runs across 49 games.
The Lady Vols have a chance to reestablish their aggressive offensive approach early in the regional.
If Tennessee handles those three areas, the Lady Vols could quickly position themselves for a deeper postseason run inside Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
“When you’re facing a team that pitchers give up a little bit more hits than you’ve seen in SEC play, you have to go out and dominate,” West said.
