Tennessee Survives and Advances to the WCWS Semifinals

OKLAHOMA CITY — Tennessee is headed to the Women’s College World Series semifinals after a 2-1 walk-off victory over Texas Tech on Saturday night.

Tennessee’s Defense Saved the Lead in the Sixth

Texas Tech appeared ready to take control in the sixth inning.

Mia Williams doubled to left-center. Mihyia Davis followed with a single up the middle. Williams tried to score from second, but Sophia Knight delivered a perfect throw home and Elsa Morrison applied the tag.

The call stood after a Texas Tech challenge.

Instead of trailing, Tennessee maintained its 1-0 lead.

The Lady Vols weren’t done. After another walk put two runners aboard, Ella Dodge secured a popup to end the inning.

The defensive play at home became one of the game’s biggest turning points.

Afterward, Karlyn Pickens credited Tennessee’s defense for making aggressive pitching possible.

“Emma Clarke, just like ball magnet. Every ball hit her way, she’s going to field, they’re going to make a play,” Pickens said. “I think that just gives us the most confidence to be able to throw our pitches right in the zone knowing our defense is going to be there to make the plays.”

Tennessee Bent But Didn’t Break in the Seventh

The pressure only increased in the seventh.

Former Tennessee infielder Taylor Pannell singled up the middle to start the inning. She later stole third after recognizing the bag had been left uncovered. Pickens issued Kaitlyn Terry a walk who later stole second.

The traffic only increased after Texas Tech loaded the bases with nobody out.

A strikeout gave Tennessee its first out, but Pannell scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.

That’s when Sage Mardjetko entered from the bullpen.

After issuing a walk, she got the help she needed when Alannah Leach made a diving catch in left field to strand three runners and end the inning.

The defensive stop preserved the tie and gave Tennessee new life.

Weekly said her team’s mindset never changed after surrendering the tying run.

“When we came off the field in the seventh inning, that was the word in the circle: Good, good,” Weekly said. “We’ll figure this out, find a way.”

That response defined the rest of the night.

Emma Clarke Finished It

Two innings later, Clarke made sure there would be no more.

Leading off the ninth inning, she turned on a 1-0 pitch and sent it over the center-field wall for a walk-off home run.

The blast secured Tennessee’s spot in the WCWS semifinals and rewarded a team that had spent the final innings surviving one challenge after another.

Weekly has long believed Clarke thrives in moments like these.

“The thing our team loves about Emma, she’s our hype person. She is just full energy all the time, all the time. She’s everybody’s biggest cheerleader,” said Weekly.

On Saturday night, Clarke delivered the biggest swing of Tennessee’s season.

“Honestly, just looking to swing at strikes and get something going for my team,” Clarke said of the at-bat. “So being a lead-off, I just wanted to put the ball in play any way I could, and it worked out.”

A few pitches later, Tennessee was celebrating a trip to the semifinals.
