Tennessee’s defense was dealt another blow at fall camp on Friday. Safety Edrees Farooq suffered a lower-body injury during practice and was transported by ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for further evaluation.
Farooq is one of three players injured, joining linebacker Jaedon Harmon and cornerback Jaidas Richards. Both of those players are done for the season.
Farooq entered his junior season expecting to play a large role in defensive coordinator Jim Knowles’ scheme. Last season, the safety finished with 76 tackles, two interceptions, five passes defended and four forced fumbles. He also had a pick-six in the 2026 spring game.

Knowles had high praise for Farooq to begin camp, mentioning he didn’t know much about the junior before arriving in Knoxville.
“He picked things up quickly and then put himself in position to make plays,” Knowles said. “So there’s one thing, getting the scheme. That’s step one. And then can you function within that scheme and actually make plays? And I saw him make a lot of plays this spring that I was happy about.”

Tennessee’s depth will take a hit if Farooq misses extended time. Penn State transfer Dejuan Lane and Michigan transfer TJ Metcalf are expected to shoulder a large portion of the playing time as the top two safeties. The Vols will also look to reserves sophomore Dylan Lewis, freshman Joel Wyatt, redshirt senior and Appalachian State transfer D.J. Burks, and sophomore Sidney Walton.
The Vols are holding their first fall scrimmage on Saturday. While closed to the media, it will provide a test of how the secondary responds to mounting injuries.
