Xavier Gilliam hasn’t needed long to make an impression on Tennessee’s defensive line.
Just ask Mariyon Dye.
“Really just how explosive he is, for real,” Dye said. “Like his get off at the ball, like he’s just so explosive and strong. So he’s like really unblockable.”
Gilliam’s early impact has been noticeable to Tennessee’s coaches, too.
The Penn State transfer has emerged as one of the most consistent performers along a defensive front that has otherwise battled growing pains during preseason camp. Defensive line coach Rodney Garner identified Gilliam and Tulane transfer Jordan Norman as the two players who have separated themselves most consistently.
“They have probably been our two most productive guys out there consistently,” Garner said. “Those two young men got to be able to help us.”
Gilliam transferred to Tennessee after spending two seasons at Penn State. The 6-foot-2, 305-pound defensive lineman appeared in 15 games for the Nittany Lions in 2025. He recorded 27 tackles, four tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks.
His physical tools have helped make the transition.
Garner pointed to Gilliam’s intelligence and natural leverage while discussing what has allowed the newcomer to produce early in his first preseason camp with the Vols.
“I think he’s a great young man. He’s smart,” Garner said. “You obviously can tell him his body feels and all that, so he has natural leverage. I think he wants to be focused. I think he wants to be good.”
Production, however, is only part of what Garner wants from Gilliam.
Tennessee is attempting to develop more player-led accountability on a defensive front that lost significant experience from last season. Garner has repeatedly challenged his veterans and newcomers to establish consistency without relying on coaches to provide all of the urgency.
Gilliam is already giving Tennessee something it needs between the lines. Garner now wants him to find his voice away from the snap.
“They’ve got to become more vocal and become more leaders,” Garner said of the transfers.
Garner said the defensive line room needs players willing to hold teammates accountable and help set the standard themselves. That challenge extends to Gilliam despite his limited time in Knoxville.
The opportunity is there because of how quickly Gilliam has produced.
Garner said Gilliam and Norman have shown flashes of being effective SEC players, but Tennessee needs them to continue refining the smaller details of their games.
For Gilliam, the first impression has already been made.
Dye sees the explosiveness and strength. Garner sees one of his most productive defensive linemen.
Now Tennessee wants Gilliam to become one of the voices of the group, too.
